A courageous and happy International Women’s Day

#IWD2022 #BreakTheBias

“Imagine a gender equal world. A world free of bias, stereotypes and discrimination. A world that’s diverse, equitable, and inclusive. A world where difference is valued and celebrated. Together we can forge women’s equality. Collectively we can all #BreakTheBias.

Individually, we’re all responsible for our own thoughts and actions – all day, every day.

We can break the bias in our communities.

We can break the bias in our workplaces.

We can break the bias in our schools, colleges and universities.

Together, we can all break the bias – on International Women’s Day (IWD) and beyond.“

Are you in? Will you actively call out gender bias, discrimination and stereotyping each time you see it?

Cross your arms to show solidarity to encourage further people to commit to helping forge an inclusive world.“

I am crossing my arms and showing solidarity. What about you? Are you in?

Courage is needed in order for people to actively call out gender bias, discrimination and stereotyping.

How does one mobilise that courage? Why do a lot of people look away rather than actively take part? What prevents people from actively calling out and acting responsibly.

Well its fear! People fear the consequences. They fear being in the minority and that others might not agree with them. They fear losing face, having the finger pointed at them etc. Fear usually makes an individual avoid taking actions or at the very least limits the actions they take. It often also drives people to their comfort zone. Why should they bother?

There is only one way to fight bias and that is to turn fear into courage and thereby create the determination and confidence to take responsibility, show solidarity and to do it no matter what. Courage creates more courage. By taking the courage to act, we encourage others to act too and help to contribute to an inclusive world.

More courage in the workplace can certainly contribute to an inclusive world. In order to facilitate more courage in organisations we have created courageaward.ch under the motto: ‘Courage award goes to work’. Our vision is to promote more courage in the workplace so that employers and employees can move forward and tackle the challenges in today’s working world.
